Tips for Painting with a Toddler

Painting is one of my favorite activities to do with Dorian. I’ve heard that many parents tend to shy away from painting due to time issues and the mess. Here are a few tips to ease your worries and get you making timeless memories with your little one. Expect a Mess I know this is much easier said than done, but if you already have it in your head that there will be a giant mess then it won’t feel so dreadful afterwards. This is always my first step to painting with Dorian. I make sure we have enough time to paint, have lots of fun, and clean up after.…

    Happy 2nd Birthday Dorian

To my little love Dorian, They say play is the work of kids, for you, working is definitely your way of playing. You love helping with anything me or Daddy are doing. You’ve been helping me with dishes since you were almost 12 months old and you’ve been doing laundry with me since you were just 1 month old. Each time Daddy brings his pedal board out for rearranging, you are right there ready to help. If anything needs moving around, you are the one to call. In the yard, you love to help drag the larger than you palm fronds to the road, and in the house, you always…

Birthday Gifts for My 2 Year Old

I mentioned in Dorian’s birthday planning post the strategy I use for having a less stressful time when dealing with buying birthday gifts. As I find and buy his gifts over several months there are a few things I keep in mind. First, I think about weather or not it is something he is currently into and if he will still be into it the following year. For instance, I had found some cool touch and feel books on sale, but when looking at the bigger picture, he will probably be grown out of those types of books come the next year. Then I try to think about the kinds…

    Little Moments: Snowman, so cute!

As I was in the laundry room changing clothes over to the dryer, I noticed that Dorian wasn’t following me and he wasn’t screaming, so I knew he had found something and got into it. I peeked out the door and he’s looking down my phone saying, “so cute”. I had left my phone open and sitting on the couch because he’s not allowed to play with our phones and he knows it. Well that 2 year old independence is kicking in big time right about now. I walk over and have a look 👀. He says, “snowman, so cute”.  He had scrolled my Pinterest page and found this.

    Pumpkin Painting

Pumpkin Painting These last few weeks I have been busy making Halloween crafts and Dorian has been right next to me either doing his own crafts or playing with all the materials. I really hope he keeps an interest in these sort of things. It will make for smoother more active days I know that for sure. We have taken a bit of a break from painting lately since he seemed to have lost interest for a while there. When I came across this wood pumpkin though, I knew it would be perfect for him to paint and maybe it would spark his interest again. It started off as a…

    Cleaning Up the Playroom

Wow, what a mess. Dorian plays hard and wild. His playroom is always upside down. Generally, I let him bask in the ocean of scattered toys, but every once in a while I do have to clean it up. Since his birthday and Christmas are coming this is the best time to go through everything he has. Also it gives me the chance to really see what he plays with and what needs to go. The steps I take to get his playroom in order are nothing extravagant, but I will share them with you anyway. First thing I did was gather the toys from our bedroom and anywhere else…

    The Tiny Crayons Fiasco

We have an overload of small broken crayons. Anyone with small children probably do as well. I’m not sure if it’s just my toddler or every toddler out there, but my little guy loves to snap them one after another. I usually don’t stop him because he’s working on his strength training, haha. I’m just happy when he’s not trying to see if every color has a different flavor. Even though I’ve told him a thousand times, ‘they all have the same flavor, disgusting,’ but he has to find out for himself. So now I’m stuck with dozens of small chunks that he can’t hold onto to color with. What’s…

    Fun Sticky Sheet Activity

In need of a quick and easy activity that doesn’t require a lot of set up, planning, or even thought for that matter? This activity can be fun for any age group. Heck, I set up my own sheet and do this activity with him sometimes. You can have it set up for free play, like I do for him since he’s so young, but you can also make letters, number, and even scenes with this one. *Please use extreme caution for this if the child is still at the age of putting everything in their mouth.* I always sit with him and give him my full attention during this…

    Potty Training: Moving Forward

I had always swore I would have my kid potty trained as soon as parent-ly possible. It made sense to have him out of diapers at a very young age. When he was very small, about 7 months, I started reading about elimination communication. I read every article and blog I could find. That’s actually where I found my favorite blog, katesurfs.com. I read all night and took notes all day trying to make sure when I started I would be doing it correctly. By the time he was 9 months, I brought out his potty and would sit with him there several times a day. It never took him…
